Abstract

Mario Vargas Llosa spent his childhood between Cochabamba, Bolivia, and the Peruvian cities of Piura and Lima. As a teenager, he was a boarder at the Leoncio Prado Military Academy, the setting for his novel *The City and the Dogs*, and he pursued his higher education in literature at the National University of San Marcos in Lima. He later lived in Paris and London, where he wrote numerous works. After obtaining Spanish citizenship, he was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy. Among his many awards are the Prince of Asturias Award (1986), the Cervantes Prize (1994), and the Nobel Prize in Literature (2010).
